      prep time
      Whipped cream
      1. Whip one cup of cream at a time until almost completely whipped. Transfer to a large chilled bowl.
      2. Gradually incorporate icing sugar to bowl and whip mixture, spreading sugar throughout and fully whipping the cream. Refrigerate.
      Assembly
      1. Place cake cubes in a trifle bowl or large 3L glass bowl to create a base layer.
      2. Place a row of sliced strawberries all the way around the inside of the bowl.
      3. Spread whipped cream over cake cubes, making sure not to touch the bowl. Top with berries of your choice.
      4. Place a second row of sliced strawberries around the edge of the bowl.
      5. Spread chocolate pudding over berry layer, taking care not to touch the bowl. Lightly press another layer of cake cubes into pudding.
      6. Spread whipped cream evenly over cake cubes.
      7. Decorate trifle to your liking with berries, cake cubes, and whipped cream, and finish by sprinkling chocolate chunks over top.
      8. Cover and refrigerate until serving. Only build trifle 1 or 2 hours in advance.

      Chef’s secret

Refrigerate bowls and beaters overnight or several hours before use to make it easier to whip the cream.

Make the cake, pudding, and whipped cream a few hours ahead of time. This will save you time when layering the trifle.

Use this recipe as inspiration to create your own trifle—try different layers of fruits, nuts, jam, cream, caramel, pudding, or other tasty ingredients.

If you have leftover whipped cream, cake, and fruit, you can make individual servings in whatever glassware you have at home. Layer the toppings to taste.
