  1. Blend together flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. Add the milk, egg, and lemon zest. Mix using a wooden spoon until smooth.
  2. In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, bring maple syrup and water to a boil.
  3. With a soup spoon or with hands moistened so the dough won’t stick, form 15 mL (1 tbsp.) of dough into a ball. Push a piece of pear Inside the ball. Place dough ball directly into boiling syrup. Cook for 15 minutes over medium heat, turning the balls at the halfway point. Repeat with remaining dough. Be careful not to place too many balls in the saucepan because the dough expands while cooking.
  4. Serve hot, topped with the maple syrup used to cook them. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
